Dangers of Belly Fat

Hormonal changes as women age, often lead to weight gain particularly in the mid-section. This weight is often harder for women to lose than in the past.

Belly fat is annoying and frustrating especially when it makes you feel icky, not like how you look and unable fit into your clothes.

Those feelings are real, but, it’s really important for you to know this excess belly fat also has significant health risks. There are two kinds of fat. The fat we see is called subcutaneous fat (the kind we can pinch).  Hormonal belly fat is mostly visceral fat. Visceral fat is the stubborn fat that lives deep inside you and wraps around your internal organs.

According to the National Institute of Health, visceral fat is direct link to:

  • inflammation

  • heart disease

  • hypertension

  • high cholesterol

  • type II diabetes

  • colorectal cancer

  • osteoporosis

  • and possibly dementia

The problem is you can't see this fat. So, how do you know if you're at risk? According to the Mayo Clinic, a waist of 35 inches or more for women indicates too much internal (visceral) belly fat. It’s a good idea to measure your waist and see if you are at risk.

But, just because your waist is under 35 inches does not mean you are not at risk.
